September News from the Kitchen

September has arrived and with it some treats from the kitchen. Come to The Wine Pub this month to enjoy the taste of September!

  • We’ve included a great blend of heirlooms on our house salad with strawberries, in the caprese salad and on our happy hour menu.
  • Our delicious corn chowder comes from locally grown corn for a refreshing taste bursting with jalapeno, sweet onion, garlic and herbs.
  • The entrée special brings back the ever-popular barbecue pulled chicken in our spin on enchiladas—don’t forget our chicken is certified organic! Even if you’re not the biggest fan of veggies, the corn salsa on the side is amazing.
  • Reminder: Tuesday is Free App day! Join us any time on Tuesday to receive a free chef’s selection appetizer of the day.

We look forward to seeing you at The Wine Pub this month!

Adopt Eddie from Furry Foster

Eddie is 7 or 8 months old.  He is a beautiful young dog; super sweet, but timid.  No agression at all.  He needs a foster who is patient and will encourage him to regain his trust in the world.  Even though he is timid, he will let you hold him and pet him. He is very quiet. I think he will blossom in the right home.  I think he will be good with kids and cats, because of his unaggressive nature, but am not sure.

August in the Kitchen

It’s already August at The Pub, which means it’s time for Bike the Bay and some great seasonal summer produce. This month we have a delicious gazpacho, gluten-free zucchini cakes with a spicy sesame ginger glaze, fettuccine, lime and cilantro pesto with bay shrimp and pine nuts, and the ever-popular sesame crusted ahi tuna salad. Our Pub Cake is a tasty blood orange mimosa cupcake with champagne infused buttercream.

Have you heard the rumors about our next community dinner? Well here is the scoop: a 3-course farm-to-table food and wine pairing, with a guest speaker from the farm, recipes explained by yours truly, and a goody bag of local produce to get you started.

If you haven’t made it to a community dinner yet, this would be a great opportunity to see what they are all about – but reserve your seat early, as we will sell out! Email for more details.

We look forward to seeing you!

Big News at The Pub

It is with great pleasure that I get to announce Malissa Sorsby as our General Manager. Malissa started at The Wine Pub over 3 1/2 years ago and quickly got promoted to our Executive Chef where she has made a huge impact on our creative and delicious menu. With Corey leaving us for nursing school, it seemed like a natural move to have her spread her expertise into the front of the house. So next time you see her, please congratulate Malissa. It’s exciting to watch her grow with The Pub!

Thanks to all of our golfers for participating in our first-ever Tenth Annual Golf tournament at the Loma Club. We had a fun day of golf, prizes and great food and drinks at the Pub. The winners of the tournament were our very own Bill Encinas, Tim Fields and Richard Bingman. Even better, we raised $800 for the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research.

July at The Pub

I hope that you had a fabulous 4th of July! It definitely feels like summer and we are celebrating the season at the Pub.

We have a new face at The Wine Pub; it is Corey’s sister, Taylor. She recently moved here from Louisville with her husband and will be helping out at the Pub a day or two a week, so please welcome her to San Diego. We’re so happy to have her as part of our family.

The Wine Pub Book Club has started…..Corey picked the first book to get us started. It’s “Anything That Moves” by Dana Goodyear. Our first Book Club meeting will be on July 22nd at 6 pm. So read up and join us for the Book Club, everyone is invited. Anything That Moves, a behind-the-scenes look at foodie culture, is simultaneously a humorous adventure and a serious attempt to understand the implications of the way we eat. This is a universe populated by insect-eaters and blood drinkers, avant-garde chefs who make food out of roadside leaves and wood, and others who serve endangered species, pets, and Schedule I drugs—a cast of characters, in other words, who flirt with danger, taboo, and disgust in pursuit of the sublime. Behind them is an intricate network of scavengers, dealers, and pitchmen responsible for introducing rare and exotic ingredients into the marketplace and, ultimately, bringing them to the family table. Highly entertaining and deeply revelatory, Anything That Moves explores the raucous, strange, fascinatingly complex world of contemporary American food culture, and the places where the extreme is bleeding into the mainstream. Mark your calendar, it will be fun!

We are planning our first ever 10th Annual Wine Pub golf tournament! That’s a joke, just to make sure you don’t take us too seriously. It will be Sunday, August 3rd at 2 pm at Sail Ho Golf Course. Mark your calendars. It will include 9 holes of golf and a post golf party at the Pub.

Entry Fee:
All In: $75 (includes: green fees, hat and post-party at The Wine Pub)
Payments Due July 30, 2014
Checks or cash only

If you’re interested in the post party only at the Pub at 4 pm: $40
Part of the entries will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Join us, it’s a fun not serious outing!

Cheers from Corey

Greetings beer fans – I hope you’ve enjoyed my monthly submissions of beer related sundries; this month’s will be my last. Many topics have been covered here, including: cooking with beer, beer and food pairings, the difference between stout and porter, the upsurge of canned microbrews, local beer related events and activities, and so on. With San Diego continuing to push the boundaries in the craft beer community locally and worldwide, there’s much to get excited about. We already have the best weather and now we can enjoy a different local microbrew virtually every day of the year, and that is a good good thing.

I’m stepping away from a full-time position at The Wine Pub in order to start a full-time position as a student. I start a Master’s of Science in nursing program at USD in August (Go Toreros?). Happily this time around I’m studying something I know I’ll enjoy. I won’t be around The Pub as much, but I’ll still be filling in as a bartender/server from time to time. After all, I am one of the only remaining original Wine Pub staffers. Wish me luck!

July from the Kitchen

July is here and with it some wonderful summer weather. We have a lot of great opportunities to enjoy this gorgeous weather out on our patio, Painting classes, Woofer Wednesdays, and live music on Thursday and Fridays. If you think its too toasty then cool down with a refreshing glass of our Sangria and an organic beet salad with feta and pepitas. Our specials for July feature some refreshing and light ingredients as well, from the crisp watermelon on the house salad, to stuffed endives and penne putanesca. Don’t forget to stop in for all night happy hour food on Monday, and free appetizer tuesday! Leah and I look forward to cooking for you!

Summer Fun

Summer is just around the corner and we have a lot of fun things happening at the Pub!

Tonight is the Taste of Point Loma, so come on out from 5:30-9 and enjoy offerings from 15 restaurants in the neighborhood. It’s always a great event and we will be offering wine specials and live music along with our delicious homemade Portobello mushroom soup samples.

Summer gives us time to enjoy some good reads, so we are putting together a Wine Pub Book Club. Corey picked the first book to get us started. It’s “Anything That Moves” by Dana Goodyear. Get started on your reading and we will have a date to meet in July. And if nothing else, it’s a good excuse to drink wine with friends!

We are planning our first annual Wine Pub golf tournament! It will be Sunday, August 3rd at 2 pm at Sail Ho Golf Course. Mark your calendars now and we will have more details available soon. It will include 9 holes of golf and a post golf party at the Pub.

Enjoy the Summer at the Pub!
